combine measurements from different satellites into time-series on three-dimensional grids (thereby showing the evolution of atmospheric chemistry over periods from a few hours to years). In this way scientists can also make inferences about chemical species that are not directly measured, based upon knowledge of the chemical reactions occurring in the atmosphere. Data assimilation can also be used to give an indication to the satellite scientist of those species that might be the most important to measure. The time-series of three-dimensional gridded analyses can also help scientists to improve their understanding of atmospheric chemistry ± this is the ultimate goal of such analyses ± in much the same way as meteorologists have learnt a lot about dynamical processes of the atmosphere from the study of accurate tropospheric and stratospheric synoptic analyses over recent decades. Part 3 of this article will describe the new possibilities for atmospheric scientists and modellers offered by Envisat, the ESA satellite launched in February 2002.
