Recent research suggests that the mesencephalic dopaminergic system is activated by conditioned fear-arousing stimuli. 4, 9 Research also strongly suggests that the amygdala is a critical component of the neural circuitry essential for conditioned fear, inasmuch as various manipulations of the amygdala disrupt both the acquisition and expression of conditioned fear. 3, 6, 8 Although, the amygdala has been identified as a site of dopamine release in response to fear-arousing stimuli, 2, 5 surprisingly little effort has been devoted to investigating the specific contribution of the mesoamygdaloid dopamine system to fear conditioning. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of intra-amygdaloid infusions of a dopaminergic agonist and antagonist on the acquisition and expression of pavlovian fear, conditioned to acoustic and contextual stimuli in the rat.
