New material of Palaeolenus (Trilobite, Cambrian) from the eastern Yangtze Gorge Area, western Hubei

Palaeolenidean material collected from the Shipai Formation at several localities in the eastern Yangtze Gorge Area, western Hubei can be assigned to two species of Palaeolenus, Palaeolenus douvillei Mansuy, 1912 and P. lantenoisi Mansuy, 1912. Study on the morphological variation, the postburial distortion in preservation, the ontogenetic changes in morphology of the new material, as well as other Chinese materials originally assigned to either Palaeolenus or Megapalaeolenus suggest conclusions as follows: 1. Palaeolenus deprati Mansuy 1912, the type species of Megapalaeolenus, and other 6 species original assigned to Megapalaeolenus, i.e. M. majiasha nensis Lin in Zhou et al. 1978, M. guizhouensis Yin in Yin and Li 1978, M. magnus Zhu in Zhang et al. 1980, M. granulatus Qian et Yao in Zhang et al. 1980, M. expanus Zhang et Zhu in Zhang et al. 1980, and M. luquanensis Luo in Luo et al. 1994, are junior synonyms of Palaeolenus douvillei. 2. Palaeolenus brevicus Xiang et Zhou 1987 is also a junior synonym of Palaeolenus douvillei. 3. Seven other palaeolenoid species namely Palaeolenus tingi Lu 1941, P. minor Lin in Zhou et al. 1978, P. planilimbatus Lin in Zhou et al. 1978, P. liantuoensis Xiang et Zhou 1987, P. yangziensis Xiang et Zhou 1987, Megapalaeolenus obsoletus Xiang et Zhou 1987, and Megapalaeolenus yichangensis Xiang et Zhou 1987 are all the junior synonyms of Palaeolenus lantenoisi. 4. Megapalaeolenus Chang, 1966 is a junior synonym of Palaeolenus Mansuy 1912. Gigoutella Hupe, 1953 is more likely also a junior synonym of Palaeolenus, but, as the monotype of its type species G. atlasensis seems to be lost, the status of the genus remains uncertain. Schistocephalus antiquus Chernysheva, as suggested by Rushton and Powell (1998) recently, should be transferred to Palaeolenus.
