Surgical complications of acute typhoid fever occur in less than 5% of patients and usually develop during the third or fourth weeks of illness secondary to local gastrointestinal complications of haemorrhage and bowel perforation.'Chronic carriage of Salmonella typhi occurs in I-3% of patients after typhoid fever and is usually asymptomatic. Chronic carriers usually have biliary tract infection as well as a higher incidence of other biliary tract disease. This report describes two cases of the late hepatobiliary complications of typhoid fever occurring in chronic carriers of S. typhi. The cases illustrate the development of Salmonella hepatobiliary sepsis in patients with biliary tract disease and the association of cholangiocarcinoma with typhoid carriage.
