Cytokinins are a class of plant hormones that regulate diverse aspects of plant growth and development. During the past decade, genetic and genomic approaches have succeeded in identifying many genes involved in the de novo synthesis, activation, inactivation, and signaling of cytokinin. Characterization of these genes has not only helped to define basic schemes of cytokinin biosynthesis and signaling, but has also demonstrated that cytokinins play a crucial role in numerous developmental processes. Furthermore, recent studies in rice have highlighted cytokinins as promising targets for crop improvement. This chapter gives an overview of our current understanding of the cytokinin biosynthesis and signaling pathways, and summarizes recent findings on the molecular basis for cytokinin involvement in plant development.
