DiscussionThe ductus arteriosus is widely patent during normal fetal life, carrying deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle through the descending aorta to the placenta, where the blood is oxygenated. This essential fetal structure normally closes spontaneously after birth. The physiological impact and clinical significance of an isolated patent ductus arteriosus in an adult depends on its size and the underlying cardiovascular status of the patient. 1
