Due to the low current-carrying capability of “first generation” wires and tapes, particularly in modest magnetic fields, high Tc materials have not yet made a significant impact on industrial applications. Much effort is now concentrated on development of a “second generation” of wires and tapes with higher critical current density which can be maintained in magnetic field. This second generation of superconducting tape is the coated conductor.
