Top Lang Disord, 1988, 8 (2), 44-62 G 1988 Aspen Publishers, Inc. what can be said about the complexity of this sentence. The type of relative clause is distinctive because of its rarity, being both nonrestrictive and center-embedded fol-lowing subject postmodification. The effect is to separate the main-clause subject and predicate by 15 words, a rare occurrence even in written language. The past-perfect verb phrase in the relative clause (had marched) is uncommon in children's language and late developing. The verb phrase in the embedded adverbial clause (fighting) is nonfinite, and the subject is not stated. Nonfinite subordinate clauses are also infrequent and late developing. Further density in the sentence is achieved with verbal premodification (an invading group).
