The reflex function of myelinated afferent fibers is examined. The largest fibers form direct connections with motoneurons. The reflex discharge mediated through these direct connections is restricted to the muscle or head of a muscle, the large afferent fibers of which are stimulated. For this reason it is concluded that the direct reflex connections are reserved for the mediation of stretch reflexes, which have identical distribution. The medium and small myelinated afferent fibers are connected to motoneurons through internuncial neurons. The discharges mediated through these multineuron-arc paths are directed to flexor muscles and represent the flexor reflex. The minimum path devoted to the flexor reflex is one of 3 neurons. In contrast the flexor tendon-jerk activity like the extensor tendon-jerk activity is conducted through arcs of 2 neurons. Reflex activity through extensor two-neuron-arcs is inhibited, that through flexor 2-neuron-arcs is facilitated during the transmission of the multineuron-arc discharges of the flexor reflex proper.
