The remarkable immunosuppressive properties of cyclosporine (Cys) were first reported by Borel et al. in 1976 (1); subsequently, a plethora of investigations on its actions and effects has been published (2–5). For some time, we and others have accrued increasing evidence that one of the critical mechanisms of action of this agent, at least in experimental animals, involves a relative sparing of T suppressor cells (Ts) 2 which in turn, renders the host tolerant toward allografted tissues. In this review, we present evidence for this concept.
