Of 1600 cases of humanFrancisella tularensisinfection (mainly ulceroglandular tularaemia) reported in Sweden in 1931-66, some 85% occurred in the northern part of central Sweden, close to the Baltic Gulf. Outside this endemic centre in Sweden, tularaemia usually occurs in the northern coast, an area which should be included in the endemic region. Sporadic cases occur elsewhere in the country. From 1931 until 1993, a total of 5754 cases have been reported from Sweden, with outbreaks of at least 100 cases occurring on 10 occasions (one, in 1970-71, in 2 successive years). Clinical forms of the disease, role of reservoir animals, and means of transmission (including by mosquito vectors, aerosols and via water) are discussed.
