The starting material for the preparation of substances for investigation was an electrolytic zirconium powder.* In the preparation of nitrides, this powder was impregnated with high-purity nitrogen at temperatures of 1300-1800~ Impregnation with hydrogen was effected at 700-900~ Carbides were obtained by subjecting the zirconium powder and spectral-purity graphite to two-stage synthesis in a vacuum of 10-6 mm Hg (1700 and 2000~ with intermediate grinding). Ternary compounds were synthesized from Zr-ZrN and Zr-ZrC mixtures in a hydrogen atmosphere at 900-1000~
