Examines recent studies of the effects on memory of hormones, as well as treatments affecting hormonal functioning, focusing on adrenergic catecholamines (norepinephrine and epinephrine), pituitary peptides (ACTH, vasopressin, and oxytocin), and opiate peptides (endorphin and enkephalin). Experiments in which the treatments are administered shortly after training are considered. Also considered is whether treatments known to modulate memory storage act through influences on hormones. There is extensive evidence that hormones can modulate memory and moderately convincing evidence that endogenous hormones modulate memory storage. Findings suggest that peripheral processes may be involved in the physiology of memory, but the studies have not revealed the details of the mechanisms by which hormones modulate memory. Such understanding, when obtained, should contribute significantly to a more general understanding of the physiology and cellular neurobiology of memory.(6 p ref)(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
