Plasma Waves in Space and Laboratory, Vol. I. Edited by J. 0. THOMAS and B. J. LANDMARK. Edinburgh University Press, 1969. 487 pp. £8. This book is the first of two volumes recording the NATO Advanced Study Institute in Plasma Waves in Space and in the Laboratory, held at ROTOS Norway, in April 1968. Vol. I, according to the editors, contains basic introductory and review papers, while Vol. II contains the usual reports of current research that one expects to come out of a conference. In fact, Vol. I also contains a few specialized research reports (especially in the laboratory plasma sections) which are somewhat out of character with the rest of the book. The subjects covered (in 22 papers altogether) are: ionospheric plasma resonances; plasma probes and antennas; and VLF emission phenomena. Taken individually, many of the review papers are quite good, but each is so short that no author has the space to do much more than develop the most basic concepts and furnish a short bibliography. Because of the basic nature of many of the papers, the book will be of some use to the student, but it will not serve as a plasma physics textbook (as the publishers argue that it is). One cannot have the continuity of argument and notation that a textbook needs by putting together 22 separate articles. The real function of the book will be to introduce space and laboratory plasma physicists to each other's current problems, and to furnish an entree to the literature. Even here, this volume will play only a supplementary role, since no single subject is covered in the depth which it would receive in a review journal. j jy[ CORNWALL
