The aim of this chapter is to merge empirical information on some fundamental reproductive parameters with phylogenetic hypotheses to provide an evolutionary framework for discussion. In particular, the underlying genetic systems of sexual species are examined. Diplodiploidy is considered to be ancestral in all major mite groups, probably constituting the genetic system of ticks, most higher taxa of Mesostigmata, parasitengone Prostigmata, most oribatids and many Astigmata. Based on cladistic hypotheses, it is suggested that haplodiploidy evolved independently in the prostigmatid taxa Eupodina and Eleutherengona, in several lineages of Astigmata, in some lineages of Brachypylina and at least twice in the Mesostigmata. Based on objective and circumstantial evidence, parahaploidy may have appeared early in the evolution of Ascoidea and perhaps convergently in some Dermanyssoidea. It is also suggested that arrhenotoky in Macrochelidae has been derived independently from that in Dermanyssoidea and Ascoidea and perhaps directly from diplodiploidy in the stock of Eviphidoidea. Patterns and ecological correlates of thelytoky in mites are also discussed.
