Brief critical review of supposed ecological factors affecting protistan populations, especially in plankton. Pearsall''s observations on Dinobryon are compared with unpublished data of the author''s, and with the findings of other investigators. A rise in the N.NO3:P.PO4 ratio or a fall in the SiO2 concn. is often concomitant with Dinobryon maxima. Probably both in this case and more generally, chem. factors primarily act by altering the competitive relations between species, rather than by eliminating species through direct transgression of tolerance limits.
