The internal electromagnetic fluxes of an infinite cylinder are explored to investigate whether fundamental insight may be gained useful to approximate solutions for scattering by a finite cylinder. The results pointed to the importance of the angular component of the flux and to the presence of a flux along the cylinder axis for non-orthogonal incidence. The possibility that the latter may introduce a standing wave along the cylinder axis is explored and its potential implications are discussed.
