The control of gene expression of eukaryotic cells is one of the central problems of biology and medicine. It is of crucial significance in differentiation, in cancer, and in other great cellular events. The present paper is concerned with alteration of the program of fibroblasts by physiological methods. The profound influence of geometry upon gene expression of cells of the connective tissue will be demonstrated. Under normal circumstances all somatic cells of a multicellular organism—for example, a mammal-possess the same genome, hence an identical potential to synthesize every kind of molecule produced by each cell of the organism at all stages of its development. Yet only a small fraction of the genetic potential is expressed; the cells at an early stage become programmed and remain thereafter highly defined in identity. The cell's program, once acquired, is tenaciously retained.
