Soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) VSP2 consists of two similar polypeptides, designated VSP-a and VSP-, 3, that are derived from the corresponding genes, vspA and vspB. These genes are ofconsiderable interest because they are modulated by several developmental and environmental factors and by jasmonic acid, a newlyrecognized putative plant growth regulator (5). The sequence ofcDNAs derived from both VSP genes has been published (2, 4), as has a genomic sequence for vspB (3). We have cloned and sequenced these genes to study the function of their promoters in gene regulation. The vspA gene sequence presented here has not been reported previously. We cloned an 8.5-kb XbaI-EcoRIgenomic fragment that hybridized specifically to a vspA cDNA probe. Both strands of subclones from this fragment were sequenced, spanning a region of 3.3 kb (Table I, Fig. 1). This included 1.5 kb upstream ofthe transcription start site, which was determined by primer extension. The coding sequence was identical with the cDNA sequence published previously (2, 4). A putative TATA box is located at-32 (TATTTA). We noted that a short sequence located at-1 18 (AGTAAA) was present in both VSP genes and in several other wound-inducible genes (PE Staswick, unpublished results), including potato pro-teinase inhibitor II which is also inducible by methyl jasmon-ate (1).
