CELL protein exists in a continual but variable state of turnover and the total protein content is the net result of the relative rates of synthesis and degradation. Cell growth is the net accumulation of protein, and although the relative contribution of each process is still uncertain the cessation of cell growth could be the result of a decrease in synthesis1and/or an increase in degradation2. We report here that cessation of growth and starvation in normal cells is accompanied by a large increase in acid protease activity; however, transformed cells which fail to stop growing also fail to elevate the enzymes responsible for hydrolysis of the great majority of peptide bonds.
