The techniques of excavation, recovery and preservation of the ancient soil contours of an undisturbed site at Pompeii are described. A peristyle garden (garden of Polybius) was discovered and its features are studied; root casts were taken; terracotta fragments were examined; nail holes in the garden walls gave evidence trees had been espaliered; soil samples were analyzed and seeds and pollen identified. When the presence of trees was ascertained, this finding was compared with evidence of root cavities in other excavated gardens. Results are discussed as is the appearance of Campanian gardens following the building of an aqueduct at the time of Augustus. Ponds, pools and mosaics in gardens are described. The evidence gathered from literature is added to that yielded by paintings, demonstrated by the same author in a referenced publication to represent actual gardens. It is concluded that the peristyle garden, regardless of its size or character, was the center of the Campanian domus. -- AATA
