The traditional focus of anthropology of the Arab Middle East on gender, religion (primarily Islam) and segmentation has recently been complemented with questions of agency, modernity and consumption. Meanwhile, anthropology of the LruralL Arab Middle East has traditionally focused on questions of agrarian transformations with cross-cutting themes such as land tenure, livelihoods, reproductive health and migration. Egypt in the Future Tense moves anthropology of rural Egypt from its preoccupation with such questions to a new arena of ethnographic exploration: Lthe deep relationships between hope and frustration, ideal and experience, aims and consequences-under conditions of capitalism, revivalist Islam and political polarizationL (p. 3). Together with a diverse cast of interlocutors in and around Nazlat al-Rayyis, a fishermenLs village in EgyptLs Nile Delta, Samuli Schielke crafted a superlative and nuanced ethnography that spans nearly a decade of fieldwork (2006-2013).
