The paper explains, with examples, methods for estimating proportions of M-N, O-A-B, and O-A1-A2-B genes in human populations, and of finding standard errors of the estimates. No explicit solution is available for the O-A1-A2-B system, but the method of maximum likelihood, used to improve inefficient estimates, is reduced to a fairly concise routine calculation. The same method should be employed for the O-A-B system, since the Bernstein method, although efficient, does not give standard errors. Methods are given for testing agreement of data with hypotheses, including a new exact test for material classified into heterozygotes and two homo-zygotes (as in the M-N system). The testing of heterogeneity (between different populations) of parametric estimates is here discussed for the first time, in connection with the heterogeneity of O-A1-A2-B gene proportions.
