Materials and MethodsThe plants were obtained as rooted cuttings from the Plant Introduction Station, Glenn Dale, Maryland. They will be identified by their Plant Introduction (PI) numbers or by accession numbers. The plants were grown to maturity under natural illumination, and bred in a screened and shaded greenhouse maintained at about 18 degrees C at night and 24 degrees C during the day. Because all the species under test were protandrous, the flowers were emasculated at anthesis and pollinated 2 to 4 days later when the stigma became receptive. To prevent loss of seeds, the capsules were protected with glassine bags until time of harvest, about 30 to 35 days after pollination. Each species was selfed and crossed with other species, using 3 to 6 pollinations. The crosses and self-pollinations were repeated until at least three capsules had been harvested. Crosses or selfs that failed to set seed after 25 to 30 pollinations were discontinued. The seeds from these crosses and selfs were germinated
