The stability towards demetallation of vanadyl-, nickel-, cobalt-, iron(III)-, manganese (III)-, zinc-, copper-, and magnesium complexes of meso-tetraphenylporphyrin in contact with clays (montmorillonite, hectorite, kaolinite) in chloroformic medium has been estimated. It is shown that the demetallation process can be described by a sequence of equilibria involving1.(i) the adsorption of the metallated form on the clay surface2.(ii) the demetallation of the complex and formation of the free base3.(iii) either the desorption of the free base into the solution, or its protonation to the dication which is retained by the clay. The vanadyl and nickel porphyrins were found to be among the most stable complexes in contact with clays, whereas the magnesium porphyrin was particularly unstable in this environment. These models showing the relative stabilities of the metalloporphyrins in the clay environment may be relevant to the eventual understanding of porphyrin geochemistry.
