Analysis of the dopamine (DA) neurons of the rat substantia nigra, pars compacta using fluorescence histochemistry, the Golgi method and retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase indicates the presence of 2 distinct populations of neurons. DA neurons located dorsally in the nigra have horizontally oriented dendrites and project principally to allocortical regions of the basal forebrain. Ventrally located DA neurons have dendrites extending into pars reticulata and project principally to neostriatum. The nigral DA neurons should be viewed as 2 separate groups, both anatomically and functionally.
