The experiments reported in this paper have been performed upon three different fish, Fundulus heteroclitus, Carassius auratus and Ameiurus nebulosus, the lateral-line systems of which differ. In the killifish there is no canal but each sense organ is borne free on the scale, a foramen in the bony plate admitting nerve and capillaries to the organ. In the goldfish, the system is of the, usual teleost type, a canal enclosing the sense organs. No accessory lateral-line organs are present but taste buds occur all over the bddy (Herrick,'03). In the catfish there is a typical canal containing sense organs. In addition there is a wide and rather general distribution of both taste buds and accessory lateral-line sense organs. The latter are never enclosed in canals, but open to the surface by pits (Herrick,'01). Harrison ('03) and Stone ('22,'33) have shown that the lateral-line organs in Amphibia arise from ectodermal placodes which are genetically restricted at an early stage. To test whether similar genetic restriction occurs in the lateralline primordia of the fish, a series of operations were performed on Fundulus embryos. Preauditory and postauditory primordia were removed at the time of their first appearance and at slightly later stages. In general, lateral-line sense organs were formed as the embryo developed even though the ppimordia had been removed.
