In a 7-year study in Norway the peaks of epidemics of infection with respiratory syncytial virus had passed when the epidemics of influenza began in 5 winters (1974/75, 1976/77, 1977/78, 1978/79 and 1980/81) but in 1975/76 and 1979/80 respiratory syncytial virus infections did not reach epidemic level before influenza became prevalent and then the outbreaks were only small. It seems that these 2 antigenically unrelated viruses cannot both reach their epidemic peaks during the same period.D. W. FitzSimons.
