In a previous work') the writer has studied the serum proteins in rabbits during immunization. By means of a special immunizing technique (intensive immunization with polyvalent vaccine) it proved possible to produce a considerable degree of hyperglobulinemia, with up to 7.86 76 globulin. This hyperglobulinemia was associated with hypoalbuminemia. The relation between globulin and albumin in these experiments is evident from Fig. 1, where 45 sera from these experiments are recorded so that albumin is the ordinate, globulin the abscissa.(Two sera, from rabbits 2061 and 2062, are left out, as presumably they contained denatured protein. For details, see the original paper.) It will be noticed that the albumin content decreases when the globulin content increases. The straight line through the points is calculated after the smallest squares' method, and it has the formula 3.2 Alb.+ Glob.= 15.6. There is a rather considerable dispersion of the points round the line, but the tendency is plain enough. Besides globulin and albumin in these sera, also the amount of antibody protein was estimated after Heidelberger & Kabat's method?) The increase in serum globulin during the immunization could be demonstrated to be identical with the antibody protein. The normal globulin (total globulin minus antibody globulin) in the animals kept constant during the immunization. For explanation of the decrease in serum albumin the hypothesis was advanced: that the
