Proximally, the byssus ribbons in C. varia are composed of an electron-dense, fibrous medulla bounded on both sides by a less dense matrix consisting of randomly arranged fibers. In TS transverse section, the fibers of the medulla display a sinuous pattern. More distally, the matrix is lost and the fibers of the medulla pack together to form a very dense homogeneous structure. Near the substratum, the center of the ribbon progressively breaks up into a loose arrangement of fibers again but a dense margin is retained. In the more distal regions the medullary fibers are more consistently aligned along the longitudinal axis of the ribbon than proximally. The sheath binding the ribbons together is also fibrous, the fibers tending to run around the byssus in a circular manner. The secondary byssus gland, which secretes the sheath, is easily distinguished from the primary byssus gland, which produces the ribbons, by its larger and more ellipsoid granules of secretion.
