Corneal wounds were produced in rabbits and rats and the changes in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis were estimated utilizing thymidine-H3 and auto-radiography. Early in the healing process each layer of the epithelium slides into the wound crater. After this, there is a cessation of DNA synthesis and mitosis in the basal epithelial cells reaching some distance from the wound. Within a day, DNA synthesis in stromal cells near the wound edge begins, and this continues until the wound is healed. There is also a wave of cell division that moves toward the wound crater and finally involves the basal epithelial cells above the healed wound crater before returning to normal. These changes closely resemble those seen in healing of skin wounds.
