Background: Necrotizing crescentic glomerulonephritis (NCGN) is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality in ANCA-associate vasculitis (AAV). As therapy relies on cytotoxic agents with potential adverse effects, a reliable non-invasive biomarker of renal disease activity and therapeutic response is needed to determine the right balance between over-and under treatment. Quantification of urinary leukocytes by flow cytometry is an upcoming biomarker in various inflammatory renal diseases. Since the pathogenic role of T regulatory (Treg) and Th17 cells in AAV is emerging, we hypothesized that these urinary T cell subsets may represent a potential biomarker for renal AAV disease activity. Methods: Urinary T-lymphocytes and their subsets (Th17, Treg) were measured in AAV patients (active with/without renal involvement, stable remission) and healthy controls using flow-cytometry.
