The Advanced Train Administration & Communications System (ATACS) is scheduled to go live on JR East's Senseki line on March 27, 2011. ATACS is JR East's first complete communications-based train control application offering full moving-block capabilty. In addition, it can optimize level crossing operations. The ATACS system allows the continuous exchange of train location data and movement authorities by radio, eliminating the need for track circuits. The author provides an overview of the ATACS systems' onboard controllers and lineside equipment, as well as a system pilot project.
