A renewed X-ray diffraction study of the liquid crystalline lamellar phase occurring in the Aerosol OT—water system (from 10 to 70% of Aerosol OT) has disclosed that the variation in the fundamental repeat distance of the structure with the water content is close to that expected for a one-dimensional swelling. The content of Aerosol OT in the intervening water layers between the amphiphilic lamellae is so low that its influence on the results of a calculation of the structural parameters is almost negligible, a conclusion which is in contrast to some earlier inferences. In the middle of the lamellar mesophase region (from 34 to 42% of Aerosol OT), there is a range where the molecular arrangement inside the amphiphilic and aqueous layers may undergo a reorganization. The nature of this remains, however, unknown.
