This second edition is a significantly updated and expanded version of a successful, multivolume first edition. The single volume format is an improvement and contains 15 chapters, the last of which provides background mathematics. It is well illustrated, although many diagrams are too small, and in some cases the reproduction leaves a little to be desired. The color plates are very nice, however, and are really essential to a truly modern presentation. Although targeted for undergraduate students and nongeophysical professionals desiring a basic background in applied seismology, it certainly could serve as a textbook for a first-year graduate course. This versatility springs from the structure of the book, which allows for several levels of mathematical rigor depending on the interest and background of the reader.
