The ecology is discussed. Collection of a large number of animals made an investigation of the life-history and physiology of luminescence possible. The life-history is typical of polydesmoids, there being 7 larval stages preceding adulthood. The animals are luminescent at hatching; luminescence is under no voluntary control and appears to be lost at no time during the life of the animal. Its source seems to lie in the deeper layers of the integument. Blood and internal organs are not luminous. The luminescence is dependent upon the presence of oxygen,"poisoned" by CO2 and relatively unaffected by cyanide. Efforts to demonstrate the classical luciferin-luciferase reaction were unsuccessful. Attempts to elicit a light flash in vitro from whole or ground-up preparations by the addition of ATP, magnesium ion, Photinus extract or any combination thereof have been unsuccessful. Under u.-v. light the animal gives a brillant chartreuse-green fluorescence. Chemical and biological tests have indicated the release of HCN by the animal.
