A new quaternary grain boundary precipitate has been discovered in aged Al–1.0 mass% Mg2Si–0.5 mass% Ag alloy by transmission electron microscopy. This precipitate is a quaternary Al–Mg–Si–Ag phase with a hexagonal crystal system and a lattice parameter larger than that for the Q′-phase in Al–Mg–Si–Cu alloy.
