Within London’s diverse museumscape, The Geffrye Museum of the Home (Figure 1) in Hackney, East London, is unique in its focus on domestic space, its objects and practices. Opened in 1914, the museum is set in eighteenth-century, grade I listed almshouses with a small chapel at their center, and large gardens. Within the current museum a series of period rooms show changes to the homes and everyday lives of middle-class Londoners over the past four centuries, whilst temporary exhibitions focus on specific topics in connection to the home. The Geffrye Museum explores the home and the way people live, but its galleries and displays do not yet engage with an issue that is central to domestic meaning and practice for many people: religion. From a mezuzah affixed to the doorway of a Jewish household, to a prayer mat laid out by a Muslim in their front-room, the home is often a space of everyday belief, celebration and practice. Material culture is an important aspect of this, with objects such as prayer mats, candlesticks and religious artwork displayed, stored and used alongside other domestic things.Just as religion is performed and celebrated in the home through a range of objects, rituals and practices, the religious landscape of Hackney is plural and diverse. East London has long been characterized by religious, cultural, and ethnic diversity (eg Kershen and Vaughan 2013) and today Hackney is home to Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Sikh, and Hindu residents. In response to this—and as part of a larger development project—the Geffrye Museum aims to include experiences of religious belief and domestic practice in a new, permanent exhibition called the Home Gallery (Figure 2), which will look at ways of making, keeping and being home.
