In vitro interactions between the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis and oral epithelial cells have lately been the subject of study in different laboratories. Authors recently examined the potential of P. gingivalis to adhere to and invade in vitro pocket epithelium. Cultured pocket epithelial tissue, obtained from patients in conjunction with periodontal surgery, generated a stratified epithelium. This epithelium was subsequently infected by laboratory and clinical strains of P. gingivalis. The invasive potential of these strains was quantitated after killing extracellular bacteria with an antibiotic mixture and plating lysed epithelial cells on culture media.
