As a highly toxic gas, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) poses risks in terms of environmental and human health. It is mandatory to investigate sensing materials for high performance H2S sensing. Compared with typically metal materials, metal-free materials show significant advantages in its low-cost, environmentally friendliness as well as stability, which attract more and more attentions in recent years. In this study, with Zinc (Zn) salt as a coreagent, a two-dimensional metal-free material, porous boron nitride (p-BN) was synthesized and a novel metal-free cataluminescence (CTL) gas sensor was fabricated. By virtue of high specific area and B-vacancies on BN, the as-prepared p-BN gas sensor showed a rapid, stabile, sensitive and selective response toward H2S, with a wide linear range from 2.79 to 178.6 mu g mL(-1) and a low limit detection of 0.52 mu g mL(-1). Meanwhile, the mechanism was also discussed in detail. The study opens an attractive perspective of BN as metal-free materials for high performance toxic gases sensing.
