Examines the relationship between infant temperament and the development of mother–infant attachment in the context of empirical studies. Perceptions of infant temperament are correlated with M. Ainsworth and B. Wittig's (1969) strange situation (STS) assessment of security of attachment. It is concluded that (1) temperamental proneness to distress in infants predicts resistant behavior in the STS and is imperfectly associated with future type C (insecure-ambivalent) classification and (2) maternal perception of temperamental interest, persistence, and pleasure predict avoidant behavior concurrently and may be associated with classification as type A (insecure-avoidant).(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
