We assessed habitat qua]ity of Zizina emelina, a threatened butterfiy in Japan, in the farmlands of Kamogawa City, Chiba Prefeeture, in central Japan, We established fivc 50 m ccnsus routes at three gitcs, ridgcs whcrc weeds are mowed only in sprin.q (hereaftcr, ridgcs mowed oniy in spting). ridges vv'hcre weeds arc mawed every menth after spring (hereaftcr, ridgcs mowed every month) and meadow of Trijioti"m repens to count the adult Z. emetina aiong each route. On the ridges mowed only in sprh]g and the ridgcs mowed evcry menth, thcre werc no significunt diffcrences in the number of adult Z. emelina individuals during the period from early Apri] to late Jime between the two ridges. However, during the period from late Jllne to early Septemhcr, the number of adults on the tidges mvwed on!y in $pring was sig]ificantly highcr than that en the ridgcs mowed in every month, During the period from early September to late October, the number of adults tended to increase on tl]e ridges niowed every rnonth, and decrease on those mowed on]y in spring; as a result, no significant ditfercnces wcre detected in the number of adults betwccn the ridges. In a meadow of Tlr(tblium repens, the adult emcrgencc period was from late August to late October, and thc peak in the number of adu]ts was in latc September. The synthetic doTminance of LotusJ'oponicus, the laiva] hest plant of Z. emalina, was high at the Iower part of beth ridges mowed only in spring and those mowed every rnonth, and at both sides of a nonpaved fbetpath present arDund paddy fields. On the Tidges mowed on]y in spring, the synthetic dominance of L. J'aponicu,s' declined from May te October, while on the ridges mowed eyery menth, it declined from May to August, and went up from August Lo Septcmber. This suggcsts that the synthetic dominance of L. jc{poni(,us centributed much to the increasc in the nLumber of adults during the pcriod from mid August to early Octoher on the ridges mowed in eveTy rnonth. From these results, it is suggested thaL, in ordcr to retain a high dcnsity of Z. emelina and the predeminance of L. japonic"s in agroecosystems, it is important that a mixturc of both ridgcs [hat are mowed both in spring and cvery month is established in their habitats, Since we observed eggs and Iarvae of Z. emeiina on T. rqi?ens in thc meadow habitat et' this study, a meadow habitat is also thought to be important for conservatjon or Z, ernelina.
