The Conference on the Diarrhea of Travelers that took place in Washington, DC, in Novem-ber 1976 was the first meeting of an international group of medical scientists gathered for the specific purpose of focusing on the worldwide problem of travelers' diarrhea. As such it represented a landmark in the history of both medical science and world tourism. Its sponsors, the World Bank, the Pan American Health Organization, the United Nations Development Programme, and Cornell University Medical College, by their interest in this subject, have identified a problem that is one of the major factors inhibiting tour-ism travel to the developing nations. Although in scattered laboratories in a num-ber of countries, work is being done that is slowly throwing new light on the causes of tourist diar-rhea, there is at present no drug, vaccine, or anti-toxin that can be recommended by doctors to potential travelers for prevention of travelers' diarrhea.
