Synthesis of polyester gels via dehydration of alpha-hydroxy acids (alpha HAs) is a plausible route to form primitive functional polymers. alpha HApolyester gels assemble into membraneless droplets upon rehydration in aqueous media that can segregate and compartmentalize early biomolecules.
