This article focuses on the promotion of equal rights feminism in the journals of the Old Comrades Associations (OCAs), which were organizations set up to support women who had served with one of the women’s auxiliary services during the First World War. In doing so, it draws new connections between the political legacy of women’s wartime service and the continuation of an equalitarian brand of feminist politics after 1918. The article looks thematically at the way in which debates surrounding equal franchise, international feminism and women’s employment were presented in the journals of OCAs to further complicate our understanding of the evolution of the feminist movement in the inter-war period. In revealing the existence of a feminist political discourse in these journals, the article raises new questions about the relationship between women’s ‘service’ identities and the nature of their political engagement in the aftermath of the First World War.
