RETROVIRUSES are broadly grouped into three subfamilies: RNA tumour viruses or oncoviruses (themselves subdivided into B-, C-and D-type viruses); slow viruses (lentiviruses); and foamy viruses (spumaviruses)'. Oncoviruses long held the lion's share of the interest. But then, the causative agent of AIDS, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), was classified as a lentivirus, which turned the spotlight onto slow, neuropathic lentiviruses such as visna virus. Spumaviruses remained the Cinderella group, having no important diseases associated with them. Now, Rolf Flugel and his group at the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg have completed their analysis of the genome of human foamy virus (HFV), which has interesting properties2
