The developmental course of visually guided reaching is discussed. Following its emergence at about 4 mo. and a period of intense practice, visually guided reaching apparently declines in practice. This decline is attributed to skill mastery, and the visually elicited reaches exhibited after the decline are distinguished from those of very young infants. Because of the release of attention that it entails, the decline of visually guided reaching may be an important factor in infants'' cognitive development.
