This paper represents an attempt to provide an overview of methods used in textbook research. Focusing first on generic methods as outlined in key literature across the field, I argue that methods for textbook research are fundamentally underdeveloped and in need of further research. Following this, I outline examples of good practice evident in a series of specific textbook studies. However, fundamental to the paper is the idea that sophisticated textbook studies can only be guaranteed with the systematic development of generic frameworks and instruments.
