In the catfish (Ameiurus) coarse myelinated root fibers from the sacculus terminate in club-shaped endings on the lateral dendrite of Mauthner''s cell. The system is already myelinated in 10-mm. larva. The large size of the components of the synapse described (club endings up to 7.2[mu]) makes it favorable for cytologic study with methods which are free from the objections inherent in metallic impregnations. In the adult, fixation by perfusion and mordanting are necessary to preserve the endings which can be differentiated by appropriate staining from other cell processes and the pericellular terminal net. Neuronbrillae are distinct in 2-3[mu] sections; they are longitudinally disposed in the clubs and the lateral dendrite so that the 2 sets usually run at an angle to each other. They do not anastomose with one another or cross the synaptic membrane. Mitochondria are irregularly scattered through the dendrite, but in the club endings they are often aggregated near the synaptic surface. The relations of the club endings to the dendrite and its branches are such that 5[mu] sections are often very difficult to interpret. The Bielschowsky technique is condemned as unreliable for the study of the synapse, since sources of error are introduced (1) by the fixation employed, (2) by the destruction of the myelin sheaths, and, (3) by the surface deposits, incrustations, and similar overlays that can be produced by slight modifications of the technique.
