SUMMARY Antibody response of chickens to boiled cells of Escherichia coli was higher at a low level of social stress, under artificial selection for a low level of plasma corticosterone, and with the administration of chemicals which block the production of corticosterone by the adrenals. Antibody response was lower at a high level of social stress, under artificial selection for a high level of plasma corticosterone, and with the administration of steroids such as dexamethasone. The detrimental effects of social stress probably relate to the initial interaction between the host and antigen.
